Who is this course for?

This 2-day First Aid at Work re-qualification course is designed for individuals with an expiring First Aid at Work qualification. It meets the requirements of the Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981 and the Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 1982.

The qualification is regulated in the UK and awarded by First Aid Awards (FAA), an awarding organisation regulated by Ofqual and SQA Accreditation and it sits on both the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF) and the Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework (SCQF).

The qualification is delivered, assessed, and quality assured in line with the Assessment Principles for Regulated First Aid Qualifications and the current Resuscitation Council UK Guidelines.

A First Aider can renew their FAW qualification by attending this 2-day requalification course within one month after the expiration date. If the certificate has lapsed by more than one month but less than three months, they may still requalify through this course if ‘Special considerations’ apply (please see our terms and conditions).

It is important to remember that once the certificate expires, the First Aider is no longer considered competent to act as a First Aider in the workplace, potentially leaving the employer with a gap in first aid coverage. For this reason, it is advisable to arrange for requalification before the certificate expires.

What will they learn?

A range of subjects are covered including:

  • Legalities, responsibilities and reporting

  • Dealing with an unresponsive casualty

  • Fractures and spinal injuries

  • Resuscitation and AED awareness

  • Assessment of the situation

  • Control of bleeding

  • Shock (including Anaphylaxis)

  • Heart attacks

  • Head injuries

  • Sprains and strains

  • Poisoning

  • Bandaging

  • Choking

  • Eye injuries

  • Chest injuries

  • Asthma

  • Diabetes

  • Stroke

  • Burns

  • Epilepsy

If you require more extensive training in your role as a First Aider, such as additional BLS+AED or CPR+AED instruction, this can be incorporated into the above courses. Please contact us to discuss your specific needs in more detail.

Duration

The course consists of a minimum of 12 hours spread over at least two days. Ideally, it should be conducted over two consecutive days, but it may be spread over a longer period if preferred, providing it is completed within seven weeks from the start date and each training session lasts for at least two hours.

Certification

A 3 year Level 3 Award in First Aid at Work (Level 6 in Scotland) will be issued to the learner, subject to successful assessment. Summative practical assessment is ongoing by the instructor each day, along with a written assessment for unit 2. The HSE strongly recommends an annual three-hour refresher programme for all students. It may be possible to grant a reasonable adjustment for a learner who has a disability, medical condition or learning need following the FAA Reasonable Adjustment and Special Consideration Policy. For example, assistance could be given with reading or writing.

Numbers

A maximum of 12 students can be accommodated on this course.

Age limit

The qualification is available to learners aged 14 or over but a learner cannot assume the responsibility of being a first aider in the workplace until they reach the age of 16.
